ABSTRACT

Corticosteroids, synthetic analogs of cortisol, are pivotal in managing chronic inflammatory and autoimmune conditions due to their potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. While these medications significantly enhance patient quality of life by rapidly alleviating symptoms, their long-term use poses serious risks, including metabolic disorders, musculoskeletal issues, endocrine complications, gastrointestinal problems, psychiatric effects, and increased susceptibility to infections. This review explores the common adverse effects associated with prolonged corticosteroid therapy, elucidates the mechanisms behind these risks, and discusses strategies for risk mitigation. A multifaceted approach that includes individualized treatment plans, continuous monitoring, patient education, and a multidisciplinary care model is essential for optimizing therapeutic benefits while minimizing potential harms. By striking a balance between efficacy and safety, healthcare providers can enhance patient outcomes and quality of life in individuals requiring long-term corticosteroid therapy. This comprehensive understanding of the risks associated with corticosteroids aims to empower clinicians in making informed treatment decisions that prioritize patient safety without compromising therapeutic efficacy.

Keywords: corticosteroids, long-term use, adverse effects, chronic inflammatory conditions, risk mitigation.
