ABSTRACT

Chronic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and asthma often require long-term management with corticosteroids to control inflammation and prevent tissue damage. However, the prolonged use of steroids is associated with numerous adverse effects, including immune suppression, osteoporosis, and metabolic disturbances. This review explores integrative approaches that combine conventional steroid treatments with alternative therapies such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, and physical therapy. These complementary therapies offer potential benefits in reducing steroid dependency by alleviating pain, improving mobility, and addressing inflammation through non-pharmacological means. The review examines the current evidence on the effectiveness, safety, and feasibility of integrating these alternative therapies with steroid treatments. While some therapies have demonstrated promising results, the evidence remains inconsistent, and more rigorous research is needed. By identifying gaps in the literature and evaluating patient outcomes, this review contributes to the growing field of integrative medicine and emphasizes the importance of a holistic, patient-centered approach in managing chronic inflammatory diseases.
